Napoli are delighted to announce the acquisition of Giovanni Di Lorenzo, 25, from Empoli.

President Aurelio De Laurentiis hailed the arrival of the right-back on Twitter: “Welcome to Napoli Giovanni!”

Shortly after the transfer was confirmed, Di Lorenzo said: “I'm thrilled to be joining such a prestigious club as Napoli. I can't wait for the new season to start so I can get to know my new team-mates in Dimaro.”

Giovanni Di Lorenzo was born in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, in the province of Lucca, on 4 August 1993.

He came up through the youth ranks at local side Lucchese before beginning his professional career at Reggina. He spent three seasons there from 2009 to 2012 playing mostly at youth level, but made his senior debut aged 17 in a Serie B match against Sassuolo in May 2011.

He spent the 2012/13 season on loan at Cuneo in Lega Pro before returning to Reggina for two years between 2013 and 2015.

In the summer of 2015 he joined Matera, going on to appear for the club 58 times over two seasons in Lega Pro.

He was bought by Empoli in August 2017 and helped them win the Serie B title in his first season, racking up 37 appearances and five goals.

Di Lorenzo has also represented Italy at youth level. After making his Italy U20 debut under Luigi Di Biagio in the Four Nations tournament, he made his U21 bow – also with Di Biagio as coach – in a 4-1 win against Slovakia in August 2013.
