Napoli bow out on away goals after 2-0 win at RB Leipzig

Maurizio Sarri's side are out of the Europa League despite a victory in Germany

A 2-0 win over RB Leipzig in Germany was not enough for Napoli to advance to the last 16 of the Europa League on Thursday night, with last week’s 3-1 defeat in Naples proving decisive as the Partenopei bowed on away goals.

Following an even opening period, Napoli took the lead on 33 minutes after Lorenzo Insigne’s shot was palmed straight into the path of Piotr Zielinski, with the Pole making no mistake from close range.

Maurizio Sarri sent on Jose Callejon, Elseid Hysaj and Jorginho during the course of the second half, but Napoli were made to wait until the 85th minute for their second. Jose Callejon burst down the right, whipping a dangerous cross in for Insigne to blast home for 2-0.

Yet there was to be no final flourish from the Partenopei, the final whistle confirming a 3-3 aggregate draw and the end of Napoli’s Europa League journey for this season.
