Defeating the European champions is proof of Napoli's quality but won't mean much unless the Azzurri win their other group matches, says Dries Mertens.

The Belgian schemer was speaking after opening the scoring from the penalty spot in Napoli's 2-0 win over Liverpool in Champions League Matchday 1.

“Beating Liverpool means a lot and shows how much potential we have, but if we want to go through we have to beat the other two teams as well,” the 32-year-old began.

“We were gutted when we went out at the group stage last year and we want to make sure we advance this year.

“We know we've got the ability and the ambition to go a long way in Europe but we have to show it in every game.

“There are lots of matches left to play and they're all worth points. We have to focus on Lecce now. I'm very tired tonight and we need to recharge our batteries for Sunday.”
