The veteran Italian spoke to the media after Napoli’s exit from the Europa League

Christian Maggio applauded Napoli’s performance in beating RB Leipzig 2-0 on the night in the Europa League on Thursday, despite the Partenopei bowing out of the competition on away goals.

"It was a great performance and it’s a shame about the first leg – we leave with our heads held high," said Maggio, speaking after the game. "Sadly the result at San Paolo was really damaging for us. The worst mistake was conceding that goal in added time – you get punished the first time you make an error in Europe.

"We wanted to turn it around tonight and we were in with a shout of completing the comeback right until the last. It’s a shame because we deserved more. We exit Europe with our dignity intact and now we’ll focus on the future."

Maggio also called for Napoli to switch their attention to the league.

"We have three big months ahead and we need to give our all in the league," he said. "We’re up for it and the team is in good form. We have 13 finals ahead of us, starting with Cagliari on Monday."
