Hirving Lozano spoke of his pride at being a Napoli player as he was formally introduced to the media at a press conference at the Azzurri training ground on Tuesday.

“I’m honoured and proud to be the first Mexican to play for Napoli,” said the forward. “I’ve joined a big club where there are lots of top players. I was delighted when I heard that Napoli were interested in me. It took a few months and the negotiations took a while, but I’m so happy that it’s all worked out.”

Lozano went on to discuss his aims and ambitions with the Partenopei.

“This team wants to play good football and win,” he said. “I come to Napoli with a lot of enthusiasm and confidence. I’ve seen lots of Serie A games and watched Napoli play a lot. I know how good this group is and I’ve been following them for a while. I’m here to do my bit and improve myself and the team, if possible. We can achieve big things together.”

What have you made of Naples as a place?

“I’ve not seen much of the city yet, but so far I’ve loved it. Naples is beautiful and I’m sure the love the fans show will mean I enjoy it here.”

What does it mean to you to be the first Mexican player ever to play for Napoli?

“Napoli is a club with great history. Lots of top players have played here in the past and that’s a big source of motivation for me. I’m honoured and proud to be the first Mexican to play here – it spurs me on to give everything I have.”

Do you think it was your performances at the World Cup in Russia that convinced Carlo Ancelotti of your quality?

“I don’t know when I convinced him, but I’m delighted to have the faith of such a big coach as Ancelotti. He’s a world-class manager and I’m sure that he’ll help me to improve a lot and perfect my game.”

What’s the atmosphere in the dressing room like?

“There are some fantastic guys here who have made me feel very welcome. I’m focused on working as hard as I can to get into peak condition. I’m listening to what the coach says and doing my bit for my team-mates.”

You’re likely to have less space and time on the ball than you did in the Eredivisie…

“I know that Serie A is different to the Dutch league. You need to show more physical strength and run more here. I’m here to learn and adapt as quickly as possible, with the help of the team and the coach.”

Would you like to emulate Hugo Sanchez, the last Mexican to enjoy real success in Europe?

“Hugo is definitely an idol of mine. He was an extraordinary player and a role model for so many Mexicans. That said, I’m only focusing on myself. I want to give 100% for Napoli right from the off.”

Napoli have one of their biggest matches of the year this weekend. How much would you like to be involved?

“I know Juve and I know how good they are. I also know how important it is when we play against them. I don’t know if I’ll be able to play – I hope to get onto the pitch but that’s up to the coach. I’m ready for any decision.”

Are you an out-and-out striker or do you prefer to get more involved in the play?

“I’ve played in all attacking positions and I like them all. Ancelotti will decide where to play me and I’m happy with whatever he decides. I think I can help the team in any position. There are some top players here so it’s amazing to be able to play alongside them.”

Does being Napoli’s record signing motivate you or add more pressure?

“It makes me happy. I’m really happy that such a big club has invested in me. I spoke to [Aurelio] de Laurentiis several times and he told me all about the team and the club. His desire to bring me to Napoli was part of what made my mind up.”

Your family are here in Naples too…

“My family is really important to me. They’re here with me because I grew up with them. The decision to come to Naples was one for my family too, and I’m really pleased that they’re by my side.”

Do you have a promise for the fans?

“I promise that I’ll always give 100%. I hope to give the Azzurri fans something to celebrate. I know that the Scudetto is what everyone wants: we’ll work hard until the end to fight to make that dream come true.”
