The Napoli forward spoke of his disappointment following the game in Germany

It was a case of so near yet so far for Napoli and Lorenzo Insigne on Thursday night, with a 2-0 win in Germany not enough to see off RB Leipzig in the Europa League Round of 32.

"We wanted to turn the tie around here in Germany and we’ve only narrowly missed out," said Insigne, whose late goal put Napoli within a whisker of the last 16. "We’d prepared well for the game and we came so close to pulling it off. We’ve shown personality and desire and we dominated Leipzig for the whole game."

Insigne admitted that the 3-1 defeat in Naples last Thursday had cost the Partenopei.

"It’s a shame about the first leg," he said. "The goal we conceded late on at the San Paolo has proven the difference. We could have avoided that and if we had we might be through now.

"That said, we leave with our heads held high and will focus on the league now. We have a very tough match against Cagliari on Monday."
