Sarri:

Sarri: "A good tactical display, but we lacked that cutting edge"

After Napoli’s goal-less draw at the Bentegodi, Maurizio Sarri gave his thoughts not only on the result but the positive nature of the performance against ChievoVerona.

"I’m happy with the performance from a tactical viewpoint, but compared to other games we lacked that cutting edge in attack," he said.

"I’m not sure what you mean by saying it wasn’t a fantastic display. I saw a team that showed the right attitude from the very beginning, that showed great application tactically. Chievo weren’t able to get any good shots on goal.

"We were always high up the pitch, defending by pressing from the front. Our opponents didn’t cause us any danger. What was missing was that individual inspiration to open the scoring.

"Perhaps one or two were tired, and that’s fair. We’re at the end of a really intense cycle and we used so much energy in the game against Manchester City.

"But I also think that, in the past, we’d have risked conceding in games like this. Before we’d always need to be at 100 percent to control games. However, we’re growing in how we read the game and in our mentality. I’m happy about that.

"Our next step forward would be to win games that are slightly deadlocked, when we’re perhaps not so slick or sparkling. But I must underline that we weren’t lacking from a mental standpoint – I saw a team today with real focus and complete application."

As regards Mario Rui’s debut, the Napoli boss added: "He did well. He’s growing and played 60 minutes with real intensity. Compared to Faouzi Ghoulam, he doesn’t get as far forward, but he’s just as good with the ball. We’ve got faith in him."
