Mario Rui reveals free-kick technique: "I practise... and watch Maradona videos"

Mario Rui was understandably in fine spirits after helping Napoli secure a thumping win at Cagliari on Monday night – and capping it off himself with a peach of a free kick.

The Portuguese full-back hit a gorgeous curling 25-yard effort over the wall and into the top corner for Napoli's fifth of the night in the dying moments.

Afterwards, the 26-year-old admitted that he was pleased with his efforts – and insisted it was no fluke.

"I'm delighted with my goal and I have to thank the gaffer and the lads for believing in me,” he began.

“Yes, I struck it well and I do practise free kicks when I get the chance. I've watched Diego Maradona's set pieces over and over again – but I'm not a patch on him! All I can do is enjoy them.”

Meanwhile Napoli continue to rack up the wins and, unlike on other occasions, the victory at Sardegna Arena was especially pleasing because the Azzurri were able to wrap up the points nice and early and then enjoy themselves.

“We're happy to get a big win because the boss urged us to push on and put the game to bed.

“We're top and we want to stay there. We've recorded some extraordinary results but I'm sure we can get even better.

"I'm improving myself thanks to the belief the club, the coach and the other lads have shown in me."

Things are certainly looking rosy for the Portuguese full-back at the moment, with his moment of personal glory coming on top of an extended run in the team. It all seems a far cry from the injury nightmare he suffered last season after rupturing his ACL.

“I went through a really tough spell after my knee injury but I kept plugging away because I knew I could get myself back to my best.

"I still have lots of room for improvement and I'm happy to have the chance to do that at Napoli.”
