Maggio: "We want to compete for the title until the end"

The right-back appeared on Radio Kiss Kiss to look back on Napoli's impressive start to the season

Christian Maggio underlined Napoli’s determination to mount a sustained Scudetto challenge this season as he appeared on Radio Kiss Kiss on Thursday.

"We know how good we are and we’ll give everything we have to fight at the top of the table until the end," he said. "The most important thing is that we realise our potential and the quality we’ve shown over the past few months. We want to continue doing what we’re doing."

Napoli were held to a 0-0 draw at Chievo last time out, but Maggio insisted that the team is fully focused on bouncing back against AC Milan when Serie A returns.

"It was a bit of a strange game against Chievo," admitted Maggio. "I think we were a bit tired after the Manchester City game, but it’s obvious that we can’t go at 100 mph in every game. AC Milan will be reenergised after their win over Sassuolo. They have real quality and they’ll be looking to prove that in Naples.

"We just need to focus on ourselves and impose our game. We need to stay concentrated on what we do best. I’m sure it’s going to be a great match but a tricky one at the same time."

Next up for Napoli after AC Milan are Shakhtar Donetsk, with Napoli’s Champions League hopes hanging in the balance.

"It’s going to be another vital game," said Maggio. "We know that we need to win our last two games in the Champions League to be in with a shout of qualifying. We hope and we believe we can go through – we’ll give our all in the last two games then see how the table looks."

Maggio also had some advice for Faouzi Ghoulam, whose recent injury echoed the one suffered by the veteran Italian back in 2008.

"I got injured in my first year at Napoli so I know what it’s like to injure your knee," he said. "It’s tough and an injury like that can get on top of you, especially in the first month. Having said that, Faouzi is strong, he has a great character and he’ll come back even better than before. We’re right behind him and want to wish him the best of luck. We can’t wait to have him back because he’s a vital player for us."
